| I am interested in reading this book and did a search on Amazon for it only to find a number of different versions from various authors. I was just wondering which is the best and what is the difference? Do some versions omit certain parts of the original? I am also interested in reading Keynes's 'General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money' which also has a number of different versions available and would appreciate your recommendations for that to. I think the only difference is the introduction and notes but the notes are useful. They help in the understanding of both texts because knowing what was the going on at the time they were being written aids in your understanding . Both books were written in an attempt to change the conventional wisdom of the time so they are arguments against a point of view of the world that no longer exist, because both men changed the conventional wisdom.
Great question! I have both books and would recommend the following versions:
The Wealth of Nations-(the Modern Library edition).
The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money-Harcourt Brace edition 1964.
There are probably other editions of Keynes's book you may want to try, but the Harcourt Brace edition I found at a Goodwill for under $5.00 and I got it.
Other economics books I would highly recommend are:
Capital-Karl Marx
Human Action-Ludwig von Mises
Man, Economy and State-Murray Rothbard
Free to Choose-Milton Friedman
Basic Economics-Thomas Sowell
All these books are from the four main schools of economic thougtht:
Marxist
Keynesian
Monetarist
Austrian
Good luck and good reading!
meg if you can read a fat book like "Wealth of Nations" online, you've got a lot more patience about sitting in front of a computer screen for hours on end while maintaining focus on the same subject than I do!!
