Why are people buying into the Boston Celtics undefeated run and think they'll win a championship?
Published by: cfz 2009-01-09

  • They got the 32 year old Ray Allen, 31 year old Kevin Garnett and 30 year old Paul Pierce playing around 40 minutes a night and we're only in like the 2nd week of the season...ESPN and other media outlets along with some fans think they're gonna dominate the league for 82 games and in the playoffs or something.

how long is it gonna take before this team gets rattled with injuries and tires itself out...THEY HAVE NO BENCH!

and btw celtics fans.... beating pathetic teams like Indiana, New Jersey, Washington, Atlanta and Denver isn't some big accomplishment this early in the season

You beat Toronto on the road...that was legit win

the others were whatevs for me

sorry to burst your bubble but don't get ahead of yourself...you're only setting yourself for major disappointment...this is nothing more than a playoff caliber team

He made each season his statistical fiefdom, and yet they all ended in bitter disappointment. The reason, of course, was the Boston Celtics.

KG might win MVP simply because the stupid analysts who are voters are in love with Boston just like they were with that choker Dirk and Nash the year before.

  • But for now there 6-0. true they havent really played anyone but they have beaten teams they are suppose to beat. it is to early to say they will win a championship but they are doing exactlly what they are expected to do. yeah there big three is old but so are the pistons.

  • its a long long season .ray allen will get hurt (bad wheels)from there they become just another average team(although kg is great)

  • It's true they have ZERO depth on the bench. I don't think the ages are a problem, though. They are studs. Anyone can get hurt in the NBA regardless of age...if one of the big 3 go down, then they could be in trouble. KG has never really had health issues, Ray seems to be feeling great since getting his bone spurs removed from his ankles - he probably feels better than he has for a few years - and Pierce isn't s guy who is a big injury risk either. I don't think they are setting themselves up for major disappointment - they are in the weakest division in the NBA and in the weaker of the 2 conferences. Winning 60 games, I think, is about where they will be....maybe 65 games. If the Pistons a few years back won 63, the Celtics can do that for sure. I sense some sour grapes here...you know the Lakers are a shell of what they used to be and you don't want to see another team dominante if it can't be your beloved Lakers. KG is THE dominat player in the NBA right now. If you play fantasy, you know he's the clear number one pick this year. He deserves MVP if he keeps it up all year...he's playing out of his mind. Who would you see more deserving of MVP right now?

  • They are not buying in, the ysaid they will win it all before the entire season. Just let it go, stop trying to fugure out when they'll loose and what if someone gets injured. How about you just watch and wait to see what happens.

  • While I believe that many are favoring Celtics to dominate their conference, I've also seen where the Spurs are still the favorite to win the Title.
More should be known once the season moves forward and they have to face the top western teams.

  • no bother answering, u're making a statement and not a question....good luck Mr. analyst

  • They haven't met their match yet. I think that the Magic will be the team that ends their run.

I have picked the Pistons and the Spurs to meet in the finals. The Spurs will eventually win it.

Thats what I think. I could be wrong. But I could also be right.

  • i agree somewhat. the regular season record doesnt really mean much. i think the celtics can make it to the eastern conference finals and possibly win the east, but they are definitely not a lock at it. i still think the pistons are the class of the east. when rasheed is motivated and wants to play, the pistons are a really good team.

  • They're getting a lot of media exposure because they have been the "talk of the town" since KG and Allen joined the team during the off-season and 6 games into this very young season. I think they are just an excited bunch of guys playing together, but seriously, a championship contender is born during the playoffs (e.g. last year's Dallas Mavs).

Yes, they may even win 60 games or so... but REAL championship teams show up in the playoffs. That said, the jury will be out until that time.

My FINALS prediction: Spurs over the Pistons in 6

  • EXACTLY! thank you finally someone said it.....I totally agree with you, especially with the only legit win being in Toronto, and they barely escaped that with a win. The big 3 will get tired eventually, and the bench players will have to play, and the Celtics bench is very bad, which I believe is what is preventing them from making it to the East finals or NBA finals this year.

  • I think they have a strong chance of winning the East. Granted the age of the three major veterans on Boston, they are used to playing long minutes and carrying teams, there is certainly less physical taxation on the players when they're not double/triple teamed all the time. Even then, I cede to you that Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce are playing a lot of minutes and that will likely decrease as the season progresses.

What has been surprising about Boston, is actually not their offensive firepower, but their defensive ability. Their win against Denver was huge because they blew out Denver by the half, effectively shutting down possibly one of the best offenses in the league. Granted some of the big teams in the East, such as New Jersey and Washington have been struggling a little, but they are still good teams. Nets for the first time have a healthy lineup (until Carter sprained his ankle in the Boston game) as do the Wizards (though Arenas is struggling and his knee is acting up), granted most of the teams they have played are from the East which isn't much contention relative to the Western Conference, they've still done well.

The lack of depth on Boston is another concern, as they don't have much coming off of it. James Posey, their solid bench vet is injured and Eddie House being the leading scorer behind the Big Three isn't super encouraging.

However, they will do extraordinarily well given:
a.) the weakness of their Conference
b.) the ability of the Big Three

Garnett has done a lot for Boston and I thoroughly think if we were to decide an MVP right now, he should get it. Being MVP has nothing to do with winning championships, that's why there's a seperate one for the Finals. If you look at the past maybe 10 years, only three regular season MVP's have ever won the Finals in the same year (Jordan, Shaq, Duncan).

In conclusion, I think they'll make it to the Finals, but I don't think they'll win, of course, it all depends on who they play (I'm banking on San Antonio). There's nothing wrong with saying that right now though, the Celtics are an amazing team.
