Why do Catholics worship Mary so much?
Published by: webmaster 2009-01-09

  • Jesus is the one that is most praised in the Bible, and for that matter, why do Catholics have a 'special' Bible?

  • They don't worship Mary, but they venerate her as the mother of God. And they ask her to intercede with god for them because she is his mother, and a good son always listens to his mother.

  • Kind of like LDS have their own too;

No telling, except that they preach that they 'have the truth', tradition style. Sounds like a car-sales commercial - 'only here'!

Yeshua was no fan of tradition.
    His mother is dead, btw.
LDS believe in gaining salvation for the dead. Stupid.

  • I dont ******* know, I am egnaustic.

  • Catholics don't worship Mary.

And about that Bible thing, it's the Protestants who have the "special" Bible, since ours came first.

  • the Catholic Bible predates yours by a few hundred years. You took out the things you did not like in ours, and called it a better version. It isint, it is just easier for you guys

  • Catholics don't worship Mary. Yes, we do pray to Mary, asking for her to intercede to her Divine Son for us in our petitions. Anyone who says this is wrong, better not ever have asked someone to pray for them, or better not have offered to pray for someone else. If intercession doesn't help, then there is never any need to pray with or for someone else, or have someone pray with or for you. The reasons we honor Mary are based on sound Biblical scholarship and on tradition (tradition is also based on sound Biblical scholarship). The Catholic Bible was the first Bible. It's cannon was largely complete in the first two centuries, and made official at the Council of Nicea in the 300's. But, contrary to what Chris says above, the Catholic Church existed since Pentecost. Martin Luther was the first to remove books from the Bible during the Protestant Reformation. So, for those who say tradition has no place in faith, remember that it was tradition that brought the books of the Bible together in the first place. If tradition had NO place, then there would be a verse in the Bible listing the books that should be included. Also, please tell me the verses in the Bible that Luther used to remove selected books? There isn't., so not even you believe that tradition has no place.

  • I have often asked my self that .... Your guess is as good as mine.

  • It's you with the "special" bible and no Catholics do not worship Mary. That's just a fundamentalist lie.

  • Catholics don't worship Mary. In fact, you get excommunicated(removed) from the Catholic faith for worshiping anyone other than God.

She is respected, and even revered - which is vastly different from worship. Even a simple dictionary will make that apparent, though many will adamantly claim that there is no difference.

All the bowing and kneeling and such that you see is an expression of that reverence. Many will of course say that the bowing and such is worship, but worship is an internal occurrence. Bowing and kneeling CAN be an outward sign of worship, but it also can be an outward sign of many other things - which it is in this case. As well, worship, by it's very definition, requires INTENT to do so. If someone does not intend to worship, then it is not worship - plain and simple. Even prayer does not involve worship unless you want it to. The word only means "ask" in the sense that Catholics use it.

As for the "special" bible, I'm guessing you mean the bible that includes the apocrypha/deuterocanon. Well, historically, it was always a part of the bible until recently. When the first bible was compiled, the apocrypha was in it. When the KJV was first translated, the apocrypha was in it then too. It has only been removed in the last few hundred years. So, Catholics have a "special" bible because it hasn't been altered is what you could say.

As for people mentioning the rosary - yes, there are 10 hail marys to 1 our father. But you must keep a few other things in mind too.

    1. First off, that is not their only prayer. It is one of many. The mass is in it's entiretly devoted to God. Mary is mentioned once I believe (unless the bible reading mentions her) in the creed - "...born of a virgin Mary..."

    2. The Hail Mary prayer is a direct quote from the bible - the angel that visited Mary said most of it

    3. In the rosary, the Hail Mary's are used to "meditate" or concentrate on the mysteries of the life of Jesus

    4. A cross or a crucifix is at the beginning or end of every rosary - the alpha and the omega - the ultimate point of the rosary.

  • Just not once, you will have to scratch bible many times and interpret it differently to fit a lot of current beliefs of christian world.

A true christian will only be a true chrisitian and saved if he looks at words of Jesus only (completly ignoring what historians have written in bible that contradict with words of Jesus.)
Not all that is there in bible is word of God. Bible contains words of historians, scribes, translators, literature, short stories, sermons, and letters, and many true words have lost their original meaning and context.

Bible was originally in today's dead languages (armaic/ hebrew), with first bible written centuries after Jesus by people who never met him.
Imagin how one word in current alive language "gay" has changed its meaning in just 50 years, what would happened to something translated hundreds of times, with original nowhere to be found.

The trinity is a doctrine from about the year 325 AD, based partly on pagan, older triune gods. It is not in the bible unless you really, really stretch it to fit.
the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one has been expunged in the Revised Standard Version of 1952 and 1971 and in many other Bibles, as it was a gross error that had encroached on the Greek text according to the Doctors of Divinity of the Church.

The New Catholic Encyclopedia - 1967, VOL. XIV, PAGE 299:

The formulation "one God in three Persons" was not solidly established, certainly not fully assimilated into Christian life and its profession of faith, PRIOR TO THE END OF THE 4TH CENTURY. But it is precisely this formulation that first claimed to title "The Trinitarian Dogma. AMONG THE APOSTOLIC FATHERS, THERE HAD BEEN NOTHING EVEN REMOTELY APPROACHING SUCH A MENTALITY OR PERSPECTIVE.

Muslims love Jesus, their faith demands them to believe Jesus was a great prophet of God and belief in the original message of Jesus the massaya (peace be upon him) who said:

    Jesus said:

    A) Mark 12:29:
"the Lord our God, the lord is One"

    B) Metthew: 26:39:
"He went a little farther and fell on His face and prayed"

    Jesus prayed to one God

    C) Matthew 4:10
"You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him only you shall serve"

    D) john 14:28 reads--
" You heard that I said to you,I am going away and i am coming back to you. If you loved me , you would rejoice that I am going my way to the Father,BECAUSE THE FATHER IS GREATER THAN I AM"

    E) Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
    John 8:54

    F) But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
    Mark 13:32

    G) Most truly I say to you, the son cannot do a single thing of his own initiative but only what he beholds the father doing.
    John 5:19

    H) And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
    Matthew 19:17

    I) Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me
    John 7:16
    J) Hosea 11:9 God tells us, "For I am God and not a man."
Jesus said (John 4:24): God is a Spirit. (John 5:37): . . . ye have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His shape"

God is a spirit. Spirits don't have flesh and bone.

John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Luke 24:39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

Jesus was tempted by devil, but can God be tempted:

(Luke 4:1-13) Satan tempted Jesus for forty days but in James 1:13 is said: ... for God cannot be tempted with evil...

Blind belief is dangerous and destructive!. Bible tells us to prove things.
(I Thessalonians 5:21): Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

Trinity was invented as an evolved concept in christianity, 200-300 years after Jesus, and that's how it confused and divided the concept that Jesus preached.

You should not accept the word son literally . Word "son" was used in bible for general human beings and other prophets also. "we all are the children of father in heavens" indicates that word "son" was used in different meaning.

Mathew: 5:9. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God.

    Exodus 4:22.
And thou (Moses) shalt say unto Pharaoh, thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn.

The belief that Jesus died for our sins and now actions do not have to fall in line with our faith, is not what Jesus preached clearly. It contradicts with interpretations and additions done by scribes/ historians centuries after Jesus:

Matt 5:20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness (your uprightness and your right standing with God) is more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

There is no guranteed heaven for anyone, this life is a test, whether you pass and enter heaven or fail,.

Ex 16:4 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction.

Jesus said, "I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:19)

Matt 3:2 And saying, Repent (think differently; change your mind, regretting your sins and changing your conduct), for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
    Romans 1:25 (New International Version)

Deuteronomy 24:26, "Every man shall be put to death for his own sin"

Matthew 25:46: "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

James 2:26: "As the body without spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead"

Jesus, Moses, Mohammad (p.b.u.h), they all worshiped the same God, the God of Ibrahim. All prophets taught "surrendering one's will to God" that is the meaning of word "Islam". Word "christianity" did not exist at the time of Christ, but you will find Jesus teachings to be "surrender your will to God" in bible many times.

JAMES 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Mohammad (peace be upon him) was also a messenger of God, who never claimed to be God, the same way Jesus or Moses never claimed to be God, nor did they ever say worship me. Bible confirms the coming of another true prophet as:

"The Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you."
    [Bible - John 14:26]

The teachings of the Church contradict the teachings of Jesus (pbuh) and that is the cause of the confusion. If only the genuine followers of Jesus, who truly love him, read the Bible in context, and study the Qur an, they will definitely reach the conclusion that GOD IS ONE, without any partners; and Jesus (pbuh) the son of Mary (pbuh) is a messenger of GOD!

Muslims feel closer to the sincere Christians than to the Jews, or the idol worshippers and the atheists.
The Qur an clearly says in Surah.5:v 82: Thou wilt find the most vehement of mankind in hostility to those who are muslims (to be) the Jews and the idolators. And thou wilt find the nearest of them in affection to those who believe; those who say: Lo! We are Christians. This is because there are among them priests and monks (i.e. persons entirely devoted to the service of God, as are the muslims) and because they are not proud.

Qur an, revealed to the Prophet Muhammed some 600 years after Jesus, (pbut) corrects the errors that crept (knowingly or unknowingly) into the message that Jesus brought. This book should prove to be a very valuable asset to both Muslims and Christians

Some verses in bible most often quoted as reason to believe Jesus as God :
    A) Revelation 1: 11 in the King James Version says, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. This verse clearly proves an undisputed reference to Jesus as the Alpha and Omega . However, this additional occurrence of this phrase does not receive support from some of the oldest Greek manuscripts, including the Alexandrine, Sinaitic, and Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus. It is, therefore, omitted in many modern translations. Scholar Robert Young stated that the oldest MSS. omit it. [1]
    source: wikipedia
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_and_O...

    B) John 14:20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

You have to see what was the meaning of "in" used in different places in bible:
But if anyone obeys his word, God s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in Him. Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.

    John 17:22-23
I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one; I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

Note: This indicates, living in God means, Obeying God s commandments, loving him, and following the Way of Jesus, peace be upon him.

Also note that, 1st John 2:5-6 (This is an epistle [letter] written by another John, not John the Gospel er nor John the Baptist)

John 10:30 is often used as proof that Jesus is God because Jesus said, I and the father are one. But, if you read the next six verses, you will find Jesus explaining that his enemies were wrong to think that he was claiming to be God. What Jesus obviously means here is that he is one with the Father in purpose. Jesus also prayed that his disciples should be one just as Jesus and the Father are one. Obviously, he was not praying that all his disciples should somehow merge into one individual (see John 17:11 and 22).
"So keep them safe by the power of the name that you have given me. Then they will be one with each other, just as you and I are one."
"They will be saved with eachother, the way I am saved with you." does not mean that all of those 11 deciphers were actually one.
    Quran sura 5
When Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): "O Jesus son of Mary! Did you say unto men: Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah? " He will say: "Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. You know what is in my inner self though I do not know what is in Yours, truly, You, only You, are the All Knower of all that is hidden and unseen.

    (Surah 4: An-Nisa: The Women, verse 171.)
O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a messenger of Allah, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His messengers. Say not "Trinity" : desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is Allah as a Disposer of affairs.

    "Quran 4:48 and 116
"Verily Allah will not forgive the joining of partners with Him, but He may forgive (sins) less than that for whomsoever He wishes"

  • Catholics don't worship Mary. They acknowledge her as the mother of Jesus. And their Bible isn't so much special as special. Unlike Protestants, who don't acknowledge her so much.

  • The fact that the catholic cult worships Mary is evident and obvious. Just watch their "pope" (who isn't in the Bible) bow down before and speak to a statue that he calls "Mary".

The catholic cult didn't give us the Bible. The catholic cult is a pagan false religion started by Constantine in 300 AD.

Catholicism teaches a false gospel of works that leads to the eternal lake of fire (Galatians 1:6-9).

  • Chris-

    You are so hypocritical.

Please let us know about CHRIS-ology........
.......a pretense of having a virtuous character, moral or religious beliefs or principles, that one does not really possess.

    Seek knowledge .

  • Catholics don't worship Mary. They think she must've been very special for God to have chosen her to be Jesus' mom, plus think she was practically sin-free herself. They simply pray to her to ask her to back up their pleas to God. It doesn't hurt to have Jesus' mom telling God "hey, you should listen to that person, they've got some good points."

  • Regarding the Special Bible: It appears that most Catholics don't know that standard Bibles don't have the Book of Widsom, 1st and 2nd Macabee, and Sirach.

I'm not surprised that they aren't aware of this, because my mom was raised Catholic and she never mentioned it to me, even after leaving the Catholic Church. I just found out recently. I imagine they probably have two Bibles: One with the extra books, and one without.

  • We don't worship Mother Mary but we do show her respect and ask her to pray for us. What Mary represents is the most obedient human before Jesus. She is the mother of Christ. If Catholics got it so wrong, then where according to you does he come from? If you did something incredible you wouldn't mind it if people congratulated your mother on your behalf. Get rid of your hate for other Christians and stop criticizing people for the way they choose to worship Jesus Christ. It is for that reason that other non-Christian religions hate us. We can't even agree that Jesus loves us and instead we all make fun of each other for what we don't understand.

  • Catholics don't have a "special" Bible. Catholic have THE Bible; which today contains the 46 OT books and the 27 NT books that it contained back when complilation of Scriptures was completed - more than 1200 years before Protestants removed certain Scripture from their bible.

Given that you were educated in the Catholic religion, I find it impossible to believe you don't know what Catholics believe about Mary. Maybe you don't believe it, and so be it - but to claim you don't know, period?

    For your consideration:

The Uniqueness of Mary as the Mother of God
Gen. 3:15 - we see from the very beginning that God gives Mary a unique role in salvation history. God says "I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed and her seed." This refers to Jesus (the "emnity") and Mary (the "woman"). The phrase "her seed" (spermatos) is not seen elsewhere in Scripture.

Gen 3:15 / Rev. 12:1 - the Scriptures begin and end with the woman battling satan. This points to the power of the woman with the seed and teaches us that Jesus and Mary are the new Adam and the new Eve.

John 2:4, 19:26 - Jesus calls Mary "woman" as she is called in Gen. 3:15. Just as Eve was the mother of the old creation, Mary is the mother of the new creation. This woman's seed will crush the serpent's skull.

Isaiah 7:14; Matt. 1:23 - a virgin (the Greek word used is "parthenos") will bear a Son named Emmanuel, which means "God is with us." John 1:14 - God in flesh dwelt among us. Mary is the Virgin Mother of God.

Matt. 2:11 - Luke emphasizes Jesus is with Mary His Mother, and the magi fall down before both of them, worshiping Jesus.

Luke 1:35 - the child will be called holy, the Son of God. Mary is the Mother of the Son of God, or the Mother of God (the "Theotokos").

Luke 1:28 - "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you." These are the words spoken by God and delivered to us by the angel Gabriel (who is a messenger of God). Thus, when Catholics recite this verse while praying the Rosary, they are uttering the words of God.

Luke 1:28 - also, the phrase "full of grace" is translated from the Greek word "kecharitomene." This is a unique title given to Mary, and suggests a perfection of grace from a past event. Mary is not just "highly favored." She has been perfected in grace by God. "Full of grace" is only used to describe one other person - Jesus Christ in John 1:14.

Luke 1:38 - Mary's fiat is "let it be done to me according to thy word." Mary is the perfect model of faith in God, and is worthy of our veneration.

Luke 1:42 - "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus." The phrase "blessed are you among women" really means "you are most blessed of all women." A circumlocution is used because there is no superlative in the Greek language. Note also that Elizabeth praises Mary first, and then Jesus. This is hyperdulia (but not latria which is worship owed to God alone). We too can go through Mary to praise Jesus. Finally, Catholics repeat these divinely inspired words of Elizabeth in the Rosary.

Luke 1:43 - Elizabeth's use of "Mother of my Lord" (in Hebrew, Elizabeth used "Adonai" which means Lord God) is the equivalent of "Holy Mary, Mother of God" which Catholics pray in the Rosary. The formula is simple: Jesus is a divine person, and this person is God. Mary is Jesus' Mother, so Mary is the mother of God (Mary is not just the Mother of Jesus' human nature - mothers are mothers of persons, not natures).

Luke 1:44 - Mary's voice causes John the Baptist to leap for joy in Elizabeth's womb. Luke is teaching us that Mary is our powerful intercessor.

Luke 1:46 - Mary claims that her soul magnifies the Lord. This is a bold statement from a young Jewish girl from Nazareth. Her statement is a strong testimony to her uniqueness. Mary, as our Mother and intercessor, also magnifies our prayers.

Luke 1:48 - Mary prophesies that all generations shall call her blessed, as Catholics do in the "Hail Mary" prayer. What Protestant churches have existed in all generations (none), and how many of them call Mary blessed with special prayers and devotions?

Gal. 4:4 - God sent His Son, born of a woman, to redeem us. Mary is the woman with the redeemer. By calling Mary co-redemptrix, we are simply calling Mary "the woman with the redeemer." This is because "co" is from the Latin word "***" which means "with." Therefore, "co-redemptrix" means "woman with the redeemer." Mary had a unique but subordinate role to Jesus in salvation.

Eph. 1:1; Phil. 1:1; Col. 1:2 - the word "saints" (in Hebrew "qaddiysh") means "holy" ones. So Mary is called Holy, the greatest Saint of all.

Luke 2:35 - Simeon prophesies that a sword would also pierce Mary's soul. Mary thus plays a very important role in our redemption. While Jesus' suffering was all that we needed for redemption, God desired Mary to participate on a subordinate level in her Son's suffering, just as he allows us to participate through our own sufferings.

Luke 2:19,51 - Mary kept in mind all these things as she pondered them in her heart. Catholics remember this by devoting themselves to Mary's Immaculate Heart and all the treasures and wisdom and knowledge contained therein.

Mary - the Immaculate Ark of the New Covenant
Exodus 25:11-21 - the ark of the Old Covenant was made of the purest gold for God's Word. Mary is the ark of the New Covenant and is the purest vessel for the Word of God made flesh.

2 Sam. 6:7 - the Ark is so holy and pure that when Uzzah touched it, the Lord slew him. This shows us that the Ark is undefiled. Mary the Ark of the New Covenant is even more immaculate and undefiled, spared by God from original sin so that she could bear His eternal Word in her womb.

1 Chron. 13:9-10 - this is another account of Uzzah and the Ark. For God to dwell within Mary the Ark, Mary had to be conceived without sin. For Protestants to argue otherwise would be to say that God would let the finger of Satan touch His Son made flesh. This is incomprehensible.

1 Chron. 15 and 16 - these verses show the awesome reverence the Jews had for the Ark - veneration, vestments, songs, harps, lyres, cymbals, trumpets.

Luke 1:39 / 2 Sam. 6:2 - Luke's conspicuous comparison's between Mary and the Ark described by Samuel underscores the reality of Mary as the undefiled and immaculate Ark of the New Covenant. In these verses, Mary (the Ark) arose and went / David arose and went to the Ark. There is a clear parallel between the Ark of the Old and the Ark of the New Covenant.

Luke 1:41 / 2 Sam. 6:16 - John the Baptist / King David leap for joy before Mary / Ark. So should we leap for joy before Mary the immaculate Ark of the Word made flesh.

Luke 1:43 / 2 Sam. 6:9 - How can the Mother / Ark of the Lord come to me? It is a holy privilege. Our Mother wants to come to us and lead us to Jesus.

Luke 1:56 / 2 Sam. 6:11 and 1 Chron. 13:14 - Mary / the Ark remained in the house for about three months.

Rev 11:19 - at this point in history, the Ark of the Old Covenant was not seen for six centuries (see 2 Macc. 2:7), and now it is finally seen in heaven. The Jewish people would have been absolutely amazed at this. However, John immediately passes over this fact and describes the "woman" clothed with the sun in Rev. 12:1. John is emphasizing that Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant and who, like the Old ark, is now worthy of veneration and praise. Also remember that Rev. 11:19 and Rev. 12:1 are tied together because there was no chapter and verse at the time these texts were written.

Rev 12:1 - the "woman" that John is describing is Mary, the Ark of the New Covenant, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, so Mary, with the moon under her feet, reflects the glory of the Sun of Justice, Jesus Christ.

Rev. 12:17 - this verse tells us that Mary's offspring are those who keep God's commandments and bear testimony to Jesus. This demonstrates, as Catholics have always believed, that Mary is the Mother of all Christians.

Rev. 12:2 - Some Protestants argue that, because the woman had birth pangs, she was a woman with sin. However, Revelation is apocalyptic literature unique to the 1st century. It contains varied symbolism and multiple meanings of the woman (Mary, the Church and Israel). The birth pangs describe both the birth of the Church and Mary's offspring being formed in Christ. Mary had no birth pangs in delivering her only Son Jesus.

Isaiah 66:7 - for example, we see Isaiah prophesying that before she (Mary) was in labor she gave birth; before her pain came upon her she was delivered of a son (Jesus). This is a Marian prophecy of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.

Gal 4:19 - Paul also describes his pain as birth pangs in forming the disciples in Christ. Birth pangs describe formation in Christ.

Rom. 8:22 - also, Paul says the whole creation has been groaning in travail before the coming of Christ. We are all undergoing birth pangs because we are being reborn into Jesus Christ.

Jer. 13:21 - Jeremiah describes the birth pangs of Israel, like a woman in travail. Birth pangs are usually used metaphorically in the Scriptures.

Hos. 13:12-13 - Ephraim is also described as travailing in childbirth for his sins. Again, birth pangs are used metaphorically.

Micah 4:9-10 - Micah also describes Jerusalem as being seized by birth pangs like a woman in travail.

Rev. 12:13-16 - in these verses, we see that the devil still seeks to destroy the woman even after the Savior is born. This proves Mary is a danger to satan, even after the birth of Christ. This is because God has given her the power to intercede for us, and we should invoke her assistance in our spiritual lives.

Mary is our Mother and Queen of the New Davidic Kingdom
John 19:26 - Jesus makes Mary the Mother of us all as He dies on the Cross by saying "behold your mother." Jesus did not say "John, behold your mother" because he gave Mary to all of us, his beloved disciples. All the words that Jesus spoke on Cross had a divine purpose. Jesus was not just telling John to take care of his mother.

Rev. 12:17 - this verse proves the meaning of John 19:26. The "woman's" (Mary's) offspring are those who follow Jesus. She is our Mother and we are her offspring in Jesus Christ. The master plan of God's covenant love for us is family. But we cannot be a complete family with the Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Christ without the Motherhood of Mary.

John 2:3 - this is a very signifcant verse in Scripture. As our mother, Mary tells all of us to do whatever Jesus tells us. Further, Mary's intercession at the marriage feast in Cana triggers Jesus' ministry and a foreshadowing of the Eucharistic celebration of the Lamb. This celebration unites all believers into one famiy through the marriage of divinity and humanity.

John 2:7 - Jesus allows His mother to intercede for the people on His behalf, and responds to His mother's request by ordering the servants to fill the jars with water.

Psalm 45:9 - the psalmist teaches that the Queen stands at the right hand of God. The role of the Queen is important in God's kingdom. Mary the Queen of heaven is at the right hand of the Son of God.

1 Kings 2:17, 20 - in the Old Testament Davidic kingdom, the King does not refuse his mother. Jesus is the new Davidic King, and He does not refuse the requests of his mother Mary, the Queen.

1 Kings 2:18 - in the Old Testament Davidic kingdom, the Queen intercedes on behalf of the King's followers. She is the Queen Mother (or "Gebirah"). Mary is our eternal Gebirah.

1 Kings 2:19 - in the Old Testament Davidic kingdom the King bows down to his mother and she sits at his right hand. We, as children of the New Covenant, should imitate our King and pay the same homage to Mary our Mother. By honoring Mary, we honor our King, Jesus Christ.

1 Kings 15:13 - the Queen Mother is a powerful position in Israel's royal monarchy. Here the Queen is removed from office. But now, the Davidic kingdom is perfected by Jesus, and our Mother Mary is forever at His right hand.

2 Chron. 22:10 - here Queen Mother Athalia destroys the royal family of Judah after she sees her son, King Ahaziah, dead. The Queen mother plays a significant role in the kingdom.

Neh. 2:6 - the Queen Mother sits beside the King. She is the primary intercessor before the King.

  • The worship of Mary came because in the early days of the church the leaders were trying to convert pagans that believed in a goddess. The church leaders figured that they could get more converts if they venerated Mary as a goddess figure. Obviously, it worked.

  • Hi.

Anyway we ask Mary to pray for us just like the Protestants ask their ministers and TV evangelists to pray for them. The only plus I guess is that Mary does not snatch my cheque or money order out of an envelope and throw the prayer into a dumpster like Bob Tilden's ministry did. Also Mary doesn't mail me out those anointed oils and prayer cloths (at a cost) either.

    Cheers,

    Michael K

  • We don't worship Mary, we venerate her.

Example: I love my husband, I love my kids, I love chocolate, I love Jesus.

I used the same word in each one of those -- "love" -- and yet you know I mean very different kinds of love, right?

Same with Jesus and Mary for Catholics. We know that Jesus is Lord and that Jesus died for our sins. We know that Mary is NOT a deity and that Mary did NOT die for our sins. So the love we have for Mary is different than the love we have for Jesus.

We have a "special" Bible because we have all the books of the OT, and the Protestants don't because the "reformers" took out seven books that were too supportive of Catholic dogma.

  • We do NOT worship Mary. Google Catholic answers. There are thousands of responses to your questoin.

  • Because of vain "traditions" taught throughout their generations and not really trying hard enough to study and show themselves "equipped", to understand The Living Word, (The Holy Bible).

  • i dont know about special bible , havent read many, and quite honestly I thought there was only one bible, and my opinion is that maybe they praised mary because she gave birth to jesus so the bible says. if it wasnt for mary we woulnt have our savior, it needed to be born, coulnt be done out of thin air lol idk its just things that make you think you know, im not a religious person but I was raised catholic....

  • seriously, that "recent questions" box isn't there for show.

    take a look at these

as for the bible, the Catholic bible came first. The Protestant bible removed books during the reformation.

  • + Saints +

Catholics share the belief in the Communion of Saints with many other Christians, including the Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Episcopal, and Methodist Churches.

The Communion of Saints is the belief where all saints are intimately related in the Body of Christ, a family. When you die and go to heaven, you do not leave this family.

Everyone in heaven or on their way to heaven are saints, you, me, my deceased grandmother, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II.

As part of this family, you may ask your family and friends living here on earth to pray for you. Or, you may also ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Andrew, or your deceased grandmother living in heaven to pray for you.

Prayer to saints in heaven is simple communication, not worship.

Asking others to pray for you whether your loved ones on Earth or your loved ones in heaven is always optional.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 946 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt1s...

+ The Blessed Virgin Mary +

"Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you" (Luke 1:28)

    "Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb" (Luke 1:42).

The Hail Mary prayer simply recites Bible passages (the Word of God) and asks Mary to pray for us:

Hail Mary Full of grace, the Lord is with you. (These are the words the angel Gabriel said to Mary, a Bible quote.)

Blessed are thou among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. (This is Mary's cousin Elizabeth's greeting, another bible quote.)

Holy Mary, (The angel Gabriel said she was full of grace and Elizabeth said she was blessed.)

Mother of God, (the Bible says Mary is the mother of Jesus Christ, God the Son)

Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. (A simple request to pray for us.)

    Amen.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 2673 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt4s...

In Luke 1:48, Mary prophesied: "From henceforth all generations shall call me blessed."

A question for Christians who take the Bible literally: Do you call Mary "blessed"? If not, why?

    + The Bible +

The New Testament canon of the Catholic Bible and the Protestant Bible are the same with 27 Books.

The difference in the Old Testaments actually goes back to the time before and during Christ s life. At this time, there was no official Jewish canon of scripture.

The Jews in Egypt translated their choices of the Hebrew Scriptures into Greek in the second century before Christ. This translation of 46 books, called the Septuagint, had wide use in the Roman world because most Jews lived far from Palestine in Greek cities. Many of these Jews spoke only Greek.

The early Christian Church was born into this world. The Church, with its bilingual Jews and more and more Greek-speaking Gentiles, used the books of the Septuagint as its Bible. Remember the early Christians were just writing the documents what would become the New Testament.

After the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, with increasing persecution from the Romans and competition from the fledgling Christian Church, the Jewish leaders came together and declared its official canon of Scripture, eliminating seven books from the Septuagint.

The books removed were Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabees, 2 Maccabees, Wisdom (of Solomon), Sirach, and Baruch. Parts of existing books were also removed including Psalm 151 (from Psalms), parts of the Book of Esther, Susanna (from Daniel as chapter 13), and Bel and the Dragon (from Daniel as chapter 14).

The Christian Church did not follow suit but kept all the books in the Septuagint. 46 + 27 = 73 Books total.

1500 years later, Protestants decided to keep the Catholic New Testament but change its Old Testament from the Catholic canon to the Jewish canon.

The books that were removed supported such things as
+ Prayers for the dead (Tobit 12:12; 2 Maccabees 12:39-45)
    + Purgatory (Wisdom 3:1-7)
+ Intercession of saints in heaven (2 Maccabees 15:14)
+ Intercession of angels (Tobit 12:12-15)

The books they dropped are sometimes called the Apocrypha.

    + With love in Christ.

  • I don't know but the worship is surly there. Look at the rosary there are 10 hail marys to one our father.

  • hey marys my name!

  • Because they're idoltares. They also preform the eucharist, which is blasphemy according to Heb. 10:12, 14.

They call their priests "father" which is contradicts Matt. 23:9.

They have additions to the Bible which Deut. 4:2 says is a no no.

And when you look at the colors of their robes you see a very good description of Rev. 17 when it talks about the whore that rides the beast!

Check out the video in my source. It's a little long and done by Dave Hunt. Very informative and well done!

  • Catholics do not worship Mary. We honor and revere her, but we don't worship anyone but God.

The Catholic version of the Bible isn't any more or less "special" than the versions used by other denominations. In fact, the Catholic Bible was written before any of the other Christian versions of the Bible, and when Martin Luther founded his church, he deleted all the chapters of the Bible that weren't consistent with his views.

  • First off we DO NOT worship Mary, all of our worship is for God and God alone. Catholics have the "Original" bible with all books and verses in tact. The Catholic Church compiled the bible. If not for the Catholic Church you would not even have a bible .
