There are two reasons why you are controlling when the puppy gets to eat and drink. It does no good to set the rule that the dog is not allowed to lay on

  • 'that's kinda a older pup that the mom would still do that, it would gross me out to, why don't you ask the vet ,, your poor wife i got sick to my stomach just reading that, tell her that i said that's gross, yuck,,,,,

  • Yes, it is totally normal. The mom is trying to keep the "den" clean. She is being an excellent mother by doing this! You should be proud of her.

  • Because it's a dog.

  • Mother dogs all naturally lick their pups to stimulate bowel action. They lick them clean.

She is doing that natural motherly chore, not so much eating poop.

Why exactly does PETA get called in to rehabilitate someone? I told her if my dog behaved that way, he would be put down so I guess strike that, Yiela.

    Cats do likewise.

However, if the puppies are several weeks old, this is not so natural.

    Keep the area clean.

If the pups are older, maybe she is trying to keep the area clean.

Pups should not live amongst poop!

  • According to our vet, dogs in the wild eat the puppies' poop so that predators do not pick up the scent. It is a survival mechanism. Tell your wife to check breath before allowing kisses! We have two poop-eaters in our house, and we can smell their breath a mile away! The mom is protecting her puppy.

  • Early in their life, mother dogs will clean their pups and also clean up their feces. Its natural instinct before they are completely mobile and out of their whelping box. In the wild, other members of the dog family (and many other species for that matter) do this not only to keep their dens or nests clean and habitable, but also to keep the odors to a minimum. It helps to keep other predators away from their vulnerable young.

5 months is a little late for the mother to still be doing this, so I would assume that there's something appealing to her still (as gross as that sounds). Is the puppy eating puppy food? Sometimes, the food isn't completely digested, and therefore the mother may think there's something good to eat there.

I've seen other people recommend adding a little pineapple juice to their water to make the feces unpalatable, but there's also commercial products you can give your puppy that would make the feces not so inviting for the mother. Ask your local pet shop for recommendations.

  • The mom dog does this for its pup at the very early stages like 1-4 weeks old.. By now this should have stopped and maybe its time for you to scold your mam ma pup by saying no now.. I think its time to stop.

  • it is perfectly normal. in the wild the mother wants to keep the "nest" clean and she will eat their poop and their embilical cords. but if the pup is that old move them to a different area then where the mother had the pups. this will stop over time

  • Circle of life.

  • It's maternal instinct- moms will clean up after their babies.
