My local server is badly corrupted after I upgraded the motherboard and CPU. Win2k Stopped working, so intalled it again over the old one, but something went wrong with IIS and I have no idea wha'ts causing IIS5 from not being able to connect to my computer name.. It keeps telling me "could not connect to -computername-. The system cannot find the path specified"
I've tried reinstalling IIS but that doesn't work either. Furthermore, while I try to reinstall the components, it tells me that there was an error while removing or installing Site Server ILS Service..
Any suggestions?
Thanks.. I'll seriously consider Apache, but any idea as to the cause of the problem?
Also, since you live in Australia.. Do you know any good (yet cheap) internet connectivity options?
I'm currently using a cable connection but need to have smthng faster.
I probably will use Apache..
But can I confidently format my HD and keep the vB files and the file I made ONLY?
Is there anything else I should keep as far as vBulletin goes?
Thanks Chris.. and sorry for the delay.
Regarding the dumpfile.. I did what u said and I got a file with no extension and about 25 Mb in size. Is this what I should come up with?
Should I assign an extension to it?
How do I use this to restore my database after a clean start?
Thanks
Definiately reinstall SP2, you'll have a lot of problems if you don't put that back on.
In any case it sounds like the driver side of your networking is fine then, but W2K is definitely having problems communicating at a service level with various components of the operating system. Try the following:
1. RIGHT click My Computer (on your desktop), or double click the System icon in your Control Panel
2. Select the Network Identification tab
3. Click the Properties button (for renaming the computer)
4. The server name will be automatically highlighted, make sure there are no spaces either before or after it. If there are, delete them.
5. Click the More button and make sure your domain name is correct (for example "dvdplaza.com.au")
6. Click OK on all three dialogs.
Restart and see if that changes any of the errors.
I did what you told me, Chris and I don't seem to have solved the problem..
However, I think I know what the root of the problem is.. It must be something to do with the Site Server (ILS) Service because in all of the different configurations I tried, this kept giving me an error message and couldn't run.
The error message I got was this:
"The Site Server ILS Service service hung on starting."
And by looking at the Services console I can see its status as "Starting" but it never actually does start!
The main prblem with the IIS console is that it tells me "Could not pind path specified" when I attempt to connect to my computer name or IP address (both of which have been verified with the ISP)..
I think IIS needs Site Server and the latter doesn't work.
The strange thing is that I can't even reinstall Site Server (which is a file called inetinfo.exe in the System32 dir of WINNT) and I get an error message that the program could not be installed or removed due to error 0x80004005.. Even installing Service Pack 2 didn't help at all. Searching Microsoft's support wasn't any good either!
Also, how can I backup my vB database without telnet or anything else that requires me to connect to my own server?
Can I simply copy the files in the vb directory within the data dir in mysql? If so, how can I recover the data later?
I'm using WinMySQLadmin but I don't see a "backup" option there.. What should I do?
Any help?
I'm getting kinda desperate here..!
This is what I got by performing the operation you pointed out:
C:>mysqlbinmysql -uroot -p vbtest < "c:vbdatabase"
Enter

The reason for the password error is that I haven't set any passwords. Likewise, I have no password set in my config.php file and that's why I tried putting the -p without the password.
I also tried removing the -p altogether and I got the same response!
Any ideas?

Firstly have you applied service pack 2 since the reinstall? This is VERY important dude, not worth trying anything until that is done.
I'm taking a wild guess and thinking perhaps your networking is buggered - say perhaps the driver for your network card is now a generic one since the reinstall, instead of the correct one? Just taking a wild guess at this point.
To quote Apollo 13, is there anything that "does" work? :)
Whatever you gave the filename is what it created, so if you didn't include an extension then it doesn't have one - it's purely a text file containing all the necessary commands to reconstruct your database so the filename is irrelevant.
Simply copy the file to whatever server you want to put it onto, and then use the following command to have it execute all the reconstruction commands (this is purely to memory, glad it's been right thus far!):
PATHTOMYSQLmysql -uUSERNAME -pPASSWORD DATABASENAME < "PATHFORTEXTFILETEXTFILENAME"
Sounds like you might have formatted your drive as FAT or FAT32, instead of NTFS, meaning you have NO security - not a good thing for a web server!!! Thus if that's the case, the system has full access to every file so those points don't apply - to check go into My Computer, right click the drive in question, and select Properties[/]i - it'll tell you the file system there (or you can use disk management now located within computer management in your administration tools).
Regarding the "Keys", they'd be talking about registry settings. Select [i]Start, Run, and then type in REGEDT32 - from there navigate to the registry path they are describing and select whatever you need from the Security menu.
Hope this helps?
After Windows starts up, I have to wait a few minutes before I can access the internet, then I get an error message telling me that one or more system devices failed during start up and that I should examine the event log.
Here's what I get when I do: (Error msgs in order of occurance)
1. The Site Server ILS Service service hung on starting.
2. The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service hung on starting.
3. Application popup: Service Control Manager : At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details.
4. The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified. (which is the same error I get when trying to open the IIS console)
5. QoS RSVP has failed to find any interfaces with traffic control enabled. Install QoS traffic control services via network and dial-up connections.
6. This host can not be ACS since the Active Directory has not been properly configured via the QoS ACS management console. Please configure the subnets via the QoS ACS mangement console.
BTW: Great site Chris!
I've tried everything but nothing seems to work.
What amazes me is that I can't delete/reinstall Windows components either!
As for the corruption of Windows.. I simply couldn't load Windows afetr upgrading and I had to reinstall it.. I think I ended up doing a repair reinstallation.
Thanks Chris..
At first I had a problem by which as soon as I typed in the command to dump all the commands back into the test database, the file went from size 24Mb to 0!
But then I realized that I was using this sign > instead of <.
The test worked fine now.. Can I confidently format my computer now and start fresh with this sql file and the vb files? Is this all I need (besides MySQL and PHP of course)??
Thanks again for your help.. I coudn't have done it without your input ;)
I've only played around with IIS quickly, and that was with the original release for NT. When you reinstalled 2000, is it possible that you installed it to a different path? If not, is it possible you used a different computer name? If not, did you perhaps use a different password for one of your accounts? Failing any of that, double check the security on the folders containing your site and make sure that whatever group it uses (to memory the account is prefixed with IIS?) still has access to it - the NTFS permissions might have been reset if you are using the default paths.
Unfortunately I wish I could get cable myself, I can't even get ADSL or even a connection faster than 28.8K, so I don't have any recommendations for a faster service :(
By the way, when you say that installing the new motherboard caused Windows 2000 to get badly corrupted - what do you mean by this? What problems did you run into? And when you reinstalled, did you specifically do a "repair" install or did you physically do a new installation over the top of the old one?
Well we didn't work out what was wrong with your current installation, short of the issues associated with changing the motherboard on an existing install, but it I can't for the life of me think of what to get you to check - one of those things easiest dealt with at the box itself.
Are you going to go with Apache when you reinstall? Might be the best bet, given IIS needs a new patch every five minutes these days.
Also once you've got the box set up, tweaked, and secured go to the following URL which just launched yesterday and it'll verify that you have every necessary patch and security adjustment in place:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/mpsa/start.asp
That's right Chris.. I am using FAT32 because my server has dual OS installed (Win2k & Win98) so I coudn't have NFTS but I'll move to NFTS when I format the drive..
As for the keys, I could'n find the MachineKeys in REGEDT32 and in fact this is a directory. I ran a find query in REGEDT32 for MachineKeys but got nothing.. Could that be the reason behind the probelm?
Regarding Site Server not working, I'm having a hard time trying to work out what to advise - not only have I never used it before, but it's sounds like its so messed up that it's one of those things I'd really have to look at. You don't have terminal services set up so I can dial in do you?
Regarding backing up a mySQL database, no don't back up the raw files - they're in constant use by mySQL and could be only partially written at the time you copy them. Instead what I do before commencing a full system backup is create a dump file for each database. Dump files are a text file containing all the mySQL commands necessary to completely reconstruct your database. Thus when my full system backup runs, the mySQL databases can fail all they want (due to files being held open), because the dump files will be backed up (and then automatically deleted after the backup).
The command you need to do this is as follows:
PATHTOMYSQLbinmysqldump -uUSERNAME -pPASSWORD DATABASENAME > "PATHFORTEXTFILETEXTFILENAME"
This would have to be done on the server in a command/batch file, script, or task scheduler though - for downloading a backup remotely I believe vBulletin has something built in but I'm pretty sure people have had the odd complaint here about problems with it (don't quite me on that though, as I haven't read the threads in depth).
Hope this is of some kind of help - I'm not really too sure what to recommend regarding your Site Server difficulties?
Ah they're using term "key" for a different purpose, just had a look at the article you're referring to and they're talking about files...
In that case since you're using FAT there is no security, so what they've said is irrelevant - anyone with any kind of access to your machine can get to, and do anything with, ANY file anywhere... so this isn't the problem (but is another problem in itself).
Not for vBulletin - but you may have other things on your server you may want to copy, but they'd be on your backups anyway?

I wish  !
I'm in Sydney.
As for SP2.. I did install it and I had the same problem. Then I uninstalled it to see whether this was the cause and it wasn't.. So I figured since the server's not working anyway.. I should just leave it for now.
As for the driver.. I'ts from the official web manufacturer's site..
Could the ISP have blocked servers.. I figured this because I seem to get the proxy section of my internet connection settings filled with proxy info (http://proxy:8080) every time I start the computer?
A motherboard is a serious upgrade, I'd be doing a totally new installation for that.
In any case, dump IIS and put Apache on instead. Seriously.
Recreate that dumpfile again, but this time don't put the "-p". Likewise when you go to extract it, don't use the "-p" either.
I've tried everything but nothing seems to work.
Everything? That doesn't leave many options left does it?! ;) I'll need a bit more help from you to be able to help you :)
Assuming you've gone through everything I mentioned (computer name, rights assignment, passwords ,etc), pop into your event log - that will have more detailed descriptions of what is going wrong. More importantly the event log may show there are two or three failures for components that IIS depends on before IIS itself fails. Copy and paste any of the details here.
I assume you had service pack 2 installed prior to this disaster? When you reinstalled W2K, you did remember to reapply SP2 I hope? - VERY IMPORTANT!
After doing alot of research I came across a page which describes my problem regarding IIS in detail and giving the same error messages that I receive..
The only problem is that I haven't been able to solve the problem the way is has been described in the article..
Here's the link: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q295/1/62.asp?FR=1
My problem is that the article doesn't tell you how to do what is required of me.. How on earth can "Allow the System and Administrator accounts Full Control.." and "Allow the Administrators group ownership of the keys" and what is a "key" anyway??
According to the Windows help files: "To take ownership of a file or folder, open Windows Explorer, and then locate the file or folder you want to take ownership of. Then Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
Click the new owner, and then click OK.
However, the is no "Security tab" much less "Advanced" and so forth! All I was able to find was the "Sharing" tab in which you can select to "Share this folder" then choose the names which can access it. I did that but faced the same problem..!
Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something.. again?
Sorry to get you involved in this mess..
