As many of you Outpost users know, when Outpost was first starting to be developed, Win XP had not even been released yet. As a consequence, the initial work on Outpost was done mostly with Windows 98, and later on, in the debug process, Agnitum started working on making Outpost compatible with Win XP.
What this meant was that when the first version of Outpost was released, it was more suitable for Windows 98 and ME users than it was for XP users. After its initial release, it became painfully obvious that there were some major issues with XP that needed to be addressed.
So, Agnitum started working on the major problems with Outpost and mostly XP issues, since they were the biggest problems. Agnitum decided to try to fix all of the major, glaring problems before releasing another update, and this ended up taking much more time than first believed.
As so often happens with AVs and Firewalls, when making a program compatible with XP, sometimes this tends to cause big problems with Win 98. Looking back now, I can see that probably most beta testers were using Win 2K and XP, and only a few were using Win 98. So, it looks like some problems with Win 98 are showing up now that did not show up in beta testing. I do know there are a number of problems with Win 98 that are being worked on, but how many, I do not know.
So here's the deal. If you have problems with version 2 and Win 98 (or any other OS bug) and it turns out to be a bug that we cannot fix on this board, please go to Agnitum Support (http://agnitum.com/support/supportform.html) and turn in a ticket. You will get a canned reply that says if you haven't payed for it, you may or may not get help, but just ignore that. If it is a bug in version 2, Agnitum needs to know about it.
It is by all of us working together that problems can be identified and then fixed. I realise what a tremendous disappointment it must be for some of you that have waited so long, only to find out that version 2 does not work well or work at all for you. Please do not be too quick to trash version 2 and go back to version 1 or another firewall. Give us a chance to get the information we need to fix the problems left and then you can switch if you need to. I, and the whole crew here at Outpostfirewall.com appreciate your co operation and willingness to work together to solve the problems that remain.
So thanks for your patience and understanding. I do believe we can make a great firewall that will work equally well with Win98, ME. 2K, and XP. :)
