Musical connotation - Classical Music Journal:: Nov 11, 2008 Musical connotation Associative or Instinctive - Classical Music Journal. and how they work in relation with cognition, experience and http://www.classicalmusicjournal.com.au/musical-connotation/HOME | I'm 15, will be 16 in February. I want to be a professional trumpeter - I'm easily grade 8 standard although haven't yet taken the exam because of school commitments, and I'm looking for work experience that is at least related to classical music. I was wondering if there is anything in music colleges that could be viable? Or anywhere else? Any ideas please let me know... Thanks. I live in Kent, willing to travel, and I'm not totally against staying away if it was further away.
Take every chance you can get to Listen to music performed live by great musicians. If there is one way to truly understand what makes something musical, then it will be learned by listening to the masters. I'd recommend checking out the closest nearby major symphony orchestra and see at what age they start hiring ushers. You'll make some money, and you'll get to hear great performances of music too. Get together with friends, form an ensemble, and go out and play. Senior centers, rec. centers, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. With the holiday season coming up there will be hundreds of opportunities. Some might even be paid--shopping centers, etc. Churches are another great opportunity.
Your ambition is admirable, but likely the best way to develop your resume as a student is to participate in young artist competitions, youth orchestras, and summer festivals (like Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (www.bluelake.org) or the Brevard Music Festival (wwww.brevardmusic.org)). Be sure to also start studying music theory asap, if it's an option.
Good luck!
