Take Newark to NYC and go to njtransit.com the commuter railroad
take the city on Long Island and go to NY PEnn Station and use either longislandrailroad.com or mta.com and see what the daily off peak rate would be for travel.
Jersey food and all the other stuff is cheaper. No sales tax on food in NJ.
Commute from Newark: New Jersey Transit's more dependable and very few, if any delays.
LIRR: more delays compared to NJT.
It's faster and cheaper from Newark. If you stay in and around your hotel in Newark, you should be fine for safety.
